Liberation Psychology: Understanding Trauma in the Latino Community with Dr. Sandra Leon-Villa

Mental health doesn't exist in isolation. Our experiences are shaped by our families, communities, and the systems we live in.

In Episode 5 of the Buena Cura Podcast, Dr. Sandra Leon-Villa introduces Liberation Psychology, an approach that looks beyond the individual and explores how history, culture, and systemic oppression influence mental health.

Instead of asking, "What's wrong with you?" Liberation Psychology asks, "What happened to you—and what has your community experienced?"

Trauma Is Often a Normal Response

One of Dr. Leon-Villa's biggest takeaways is that trauma isn't always the result of one major event.

Living through discrimination, immigration stress, financial hardship, or generational trauma can affect the nervous system over time.

As she explains,

"We are not living in a vacuum."

Understanding the bigger picture helps us replace self-blame with self-compassion.

Why Historical Context Matters

Many of the challenges Latino communities face today are connected to experiences passed down through generations.

Recognizing that history doesn't erase our struggles, but it helps explain them. It reminds us that some emotional patterns are learned—not inherited—and can be changed.

Unlearning Internalized Messages

Healing also means questioning beliefs we've absorbed over time.

Dr. Leon-Villa discusses the importance of unlearning internalized racism, harmful stereotypes, and narratives that tell us we're "less than."

"We need to unlearn a lot of that."

Creating new beliefs rooted in self-worth is an important part of personal and collective healing.

Boundaries Can Strengthen Relationships

Setting boundaries within Latino families can feel uncomfortable, especially when family loyalty is deeply valued.

But boundaries aren't about rejecting loved ones—they're about protecting your well-being while creating healthier relationships built on respect and understanding.
